About

Our Surroundings

It is difficult to describe to someone unfamiliar with the Sierra Nevada the spectacular beauty of this area. From towering, 9000-foot mountain peaks, to the breathtaking expanse of Lake Tahoe, this is truly one of the most beautiful places on Earth. Squaw Valley Academy’s safe, clean campus is nestled in the Olympic Valley at the edge of the Tahoe National Forest. It is less than 5 miles from California’s largest and most beautiful lake, Lake Tahoe. Our campus is only 2 miles from Squaw Valley Ski Resort, home of the 1960 Winter Olympics. With this as our backyard, the Sierra Nevada provides an ideal location in which to practice our commitment to real accomplishment and personal success.

Our well-appointed residential buildings become a home-away-from-home for our students, who typically live in two-person dormitory rooms. Adult staff are present and available to monitor and help students in dormitories and elsewhere on campus 24 hours per day.

Of course, the campus of the Academy extends well beyond its buildings; SVA blends into the rich, exciting world of the Sierra Nevada. The stunning environment surrounding our campus holds as much potential to learn and to accomplish as do our classrooms and textbooks. Taken together, our rigorous academic program, combined with our spectacular surroundings, provide an educational experience of unusual richness and a lifetime of memories.

In addition to the Sierra Nevada, the quaint, historic towns of Tahoe City and Truckee are each within a few miles of Squaw Valley Academy. They provide a variety of shopping opportunities, as well as restaurants, hotels, and recreational options. The city of Reno, Nevada, is 45 miles to the east; Sacramento is 100 miles to the west; and San Francisco is 200 miles to the west – less than four hours by car, or 50 minutes by air.

At an elevation of 6,200 feet (2000 meters), the our campus experiences clean, fresh air and a full range of seasonal climates. Blessed with an unusually sunny environment, we average 300 days of sunshine every year, and average temperatures range from a low of 20°F in the winter to a high of 85°F in the summer (-7°C to 30°C).
